last will and testament [13 Aug 2002|04:15pm]
And now, the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friend, I'll say it clear
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain
I've lived a life that's full
I've traveled each and ev'ry highway
But more, much more than this
I did it my way

Regrets, I've had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption
I planned each charted course
Each careful step along the byway
But more, much more than this
I did it my way

Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all, when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out
I faced it all and I stood tall
And did it my way

I've loved, I've laughed and cried
I've had my fill; my share of losing
And now, as tears subside
I find it all so amusing
To think I did all that
And may I say - not in a shy way
"No, oh no not me
I did it my way"

For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught
To say the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows
And did it my way

Man, I almost forgot -- my vacation has officially started. Two weeks away from work. I'm going to Maine, Manhattan, and whereever else I can rocket to in my bitchin' ride. I think I'll also do some biking around the Middlesex Fells or do a tour up to Rockport. I might take the Cat to Halifax (does anyone know if they check passports crossing over up there?), or see if I can make the drive to Key West. Who knows...

so much for uninterruptible power [28 Jun 2002|04:08pm]
A lightning strike apparently blew out a transformer or two nearby. I was walking down the hall to my office when all the lights suddenly dimmed momentarily. When I returned, my desktop was in the midst of bitching that /var/tmp/utmpx was unreachable and I should run fsck.

Apparently the whole campus took the hit. Generators came on, but not fast enough. The HPC lab got knocked out badly, and I'd hate to see what the Sun Fire lab looks like (or our on-campus datacenter, for that matter).

I'm going home now.

While biking at the gym yesterday, one of the TVs had a little point/counterpoint between some chick from "American Cause" (whatever that is) and a lady from a teachers union of some sort, discussing the school vouchers victory in the USSC and why it was good/bad. Not a whole lot of intelligent conversation all around, but the teachers union lady advanced probably the stupidest reasoning I've ever heard for why the voucher system is bad for america: because "private schools are not held to as high standards as public schools".

So by encouraging schools to fail, the students are supposed to succeed? Oh wait, that's not stupid, that's just been the teachers union party line for the past 30 years.

McKinsey has a decent read on AI usages in business. Dumbed down a bit for the executive types, but still a interesting article.

I'm moving.

I'm moving because my roommates are gutless twerps who have no spine yet manage to walk upright, somehow. Because I am unsocial. Because I don't find them enormously funny. Because I don't give them the love they crave. Well, 3 of them, anyway.

Becki, in a sign of solidarity and just plain levelheadedness, is moving too, and telling these fuckwad "friends" of hers exactly where to shove it.

It's amazing how things work out sometimes. Even when you attempt to distance yourself from the spineless little shits who can't even look you in the eye but can tear you down behind your back, they still manage to get into your life and make a mess.

In the long run, it's good. I'll sorely miss cheap rent, a nice place, proximity to everything (especially the Burren), and a reasonable reverse commute, but I won't miss my asshole neighbors, Somerville parking nazis, wankers rolling down Elm letting everyone in the city hear the new Slim Shady shit on repeat, and most of all, I won't miss the little dirtbags who are too afraid to face discomfort, so they just force it out of their sight. Who knows, I may just land in a nicer joint, with fatass views of the city, a parking space, a yard, a spare room to put shit in and the ability to leave nice things and books in the living room without worrying they'll have PBR spilled on them.

To all the people here on LJ and elsewhere that I care about, a general warning: watch your step. assholes abound.

where'd that $3.8 billion go?

Sucks to be a WorldCom shareholder this morning. Heck, it's sucked to be a WorldCom shareholder for the past two years.

"For me the pinnacle of selfishness is the driver who takes up two prime parking spaces in a crowded parking lot just so they won't get a little door ding. That's precisely why despite the shitty mileage and poor handling, I drive a Caterpillar D6 front-end loader. It's worth it to see the look on the selfish prick's face when he comes out to find his highly Simonized Mini Cooper neatly balanced on the awning of the Pottery Barn."
-- Dennis Miller

I'm about a disc and a half into this collection, and to this point it has not failed me for even a moment.

Man, working from home has its privileges. I should do this more often.

I was watching this match before I went to work. I watched up until the 72nd minute, after about six legitimate scoring opportunities by Korea. Italy could not hold up a solid defense, which seemed really odd considering, well, it's Italy. That stadium must've blown up after Korea tied it with less than 2 minutes in non-injury time. Whatever was left was probably smashed to hell when they won it in OT. Holy cow. Soccernet is calling it the greatest upset in World Cup history. Wild.

I got a porn email in my inbox today with the subject line "Your car is on fire!".

Clinton stumps for Maloney in Newtown

Just got back from the Stiff Little Fingers 25th anniversary show at the Paradise, which fucking rocked my socks. I heard all my SLF favorites, which was a little better than last year's show. I'm still jonesin' for an SLF soccer jersey, but today I settled for a SLF print poster. They did a fucking rockin version of Roots and Silver Lining, but unfortunately no "No Sleep til Belfast" this time.

Tomorrow, doing the father's day thing olde school. Pops and I are playing catch and then hitting the batting cage. And a week from tomorrow I'm playing hooky from work to help launch the boat. It's not truly summer until we get the boat in the water...
